Do you ever feel as if singing has become more difficult than it should be? What if, as singers, we could negotiate a better deal for ourselves? Less struggle. More fun. Sounds divine, right!?
Contrary to popular belief, singing should not be hard. I have always maintained the idea "God never intended singing to be difficult!" However, many singers, in an effort to assist the pitch, unknowingly insert tension into their own voices; allowing unwanted pressure to mount. Thus, getting in their own way of producing a relaxed, healthy sound. As a singer, what you should strive towards is developing an innate sense of balance. Balance between chest and head. Balance between air and muscle.
With the knowledge of a few, simple exercises, singers can quickly develop the skill set necessary to overcome challenges their voices may present.
If singing has become difficult or unpredictable for you, start by asking yourself a few, simple questions.
"Do anyof the pitches feel stronger (or weaker) than others? Are all ofmy words easily understood?"
Or ask yourself "Does singing in the top of my voice feel as effortless (or easy) as it does in the bottom?"
If your singing feels heavy, squeezed, laborious, pinched, nasal, airy, weak, fatigued, or simply stated no longer fun, you are working for your voice more than your voice is working'for you!?And you are working too hard!!
Don't get me wrong, it may require a great deal of work on your behalf to achieve balance in your voice to this level of ease. And make no mistake, singers of all levels of experience and talent will at one point stumble and need to restore balance. My friend and mentor, Seth Riggs, said it best when he said "Good singing is an absolute refusal on the singer's behalf to assist (or help) the pitch in any way."
When is the last time you felt like that while singing!?
